Crackdown

Storyline

Nick Breakspear thinks he's opted for the easy life, but acting as nursemaid for the idle rich aboard the luxury yacht Wavebreaker in the Bahamas does have its downside.

Especially when you come across a bullet-ridden boat not far from the infamous drug baron's hideaway island of Murder Cay. Most people would see sense and turn a blind eye. But Nick breakspear isn't most people.

Before long, Nick and the crew of Wavebreaker find themselves caught in the middle of a drug war between two equally matched and just as deadly forces. And neither side is taking prisoners...

Review

This book which follows on the heels of Sea Lord, is a much faster paced story. Unlike Johnny in the previous book the lead character Nick is dragged into the story unwillingly. He finds a boat severely battered, and because of the find the drug lords believe that he has been where he shouldn't. Having escaped the clutches of the drug barons, he then finds himslef embroiled in the drugs game, when he is asked to look after a wealthy politicians children who are heavily into drugs.

What Nick doesn't realise is that the elder child has made arrangements to escape become more heavily involved in the drugs game. Nick in an attempt to extricate himself and his would be girlfriend is forced to take the drug barons on, and in doing so becomes an unwitting aid for the DEA.

I really liked the book, it's exotic location and the storyline. It's very unclear right up until the end who is who, and what their motives are. The main characters are likeable, even the Maggot in his own way.

The story shows the strong attention to detail that are a signature of Cornwell's work. The sailing details, are spot on and all add to the story.

A great book, a little different to what we now expect from the author, but just shows the depth of the his writing, which has got better since this was written.
